Q. How do I join the SMC?
Simply contact Jan Campbell our Club Secretary or email the SMC. We would encourage you to come along on as many club meets as you like, whether they be Tuesday evening walks, Sunday meets or even weekends away. This allows you to get an idea of whether the SMC is right for you before committing fully to membership.
Q. Do I have to be physically fit?
No not really... but you will become fit!
Q. What can I expect on a typical Tuesday evening?
Tuesday evening walks are between 1.5 to 2 hours every week of the year, meeting at 7:30pm at various locations throughout Shropshire. We usually split into two groups - a slower pace and a more sporting pace so there is a pace to suit everyone. There are also fell runners and mountain bikers plus climbers who organise activities for members during the summer months. A Tuesday evening walk is always followed with a social drink in a local pub (a different one every week). Usually around twenty members will turn up in the pub after a walk (plus a few who miss the walk and go straight to the pub..tut tut!)
Q. Am I too old?
You are never too old!
Q. Am I too young?
Anyone over the age of 18 is welcome and encouraged to join our club.
Q. Where do you meet?
Every Tuesday we meet at a different location within Shropshire typically the Longmynd and Stiperstones area. Our weekend meets are always listed in our newsletter (available on this website) and in the Future Events section of our website.
Q. Do you go to the pub?
Of course! Generally, we visit a different pub every Tuesday evening after our activities, but also our weekend meets involve a social drink of one sort or another...
Q. What if I can't read a map?
Don't worry. In fact I am a little unsure about some of our current members! If you want to learn then there are plenty of experienced map-readers in the club, all you have to do is ask...
Q. Can I turn up on my own or bring a friend along for my first meet?
Either - whatever is comfortable for you. If you are on your own then you will be made very welcome. Please get in touch and we can buddy you up with one of out friendly members for a taster session
Q. Do I need special equipment?
If you are out walking then you will need a pair of walking boots and
clothing appropriate to the weather. For summer weekend meets; chat to
us about what you will need to bring, it is fairly simple. For climbing,
mountain biking and fell-running speak to those members who organise
them for more information. For our winter trips, have a look at the
New
Members Safety Information booklet in advance
to see what you will need.
Need futher information?
We have tried to give you as much information as we can in this FAQ section but if there is anything that you are unsure about or need more information on please get in touch.
We hope to see you soon!
